This course introduces students to the recognition and treatment of common sports injuries. Building on their knowledge of anatomy, students will learn how to assess, rehabilitate, and tape or support sports injuries to enhance the recovery process and speed healing.

This course includes two components: a self-paced, asynchronous online course with six modules and three in-person skill sessions.
Online modules (to be completed between January 16-February 28):
- Module 1: Athlete care, anatomical terminology, and taping considerations.
- Module 2: Ankle and lower leg: Functional anatomy, injuries, and management.
- Module 3: Hip and thigh: Functional anatomy, injuries, and management.
- Module 4: Elbow, wrist, and hand: Functional anatomy, injuries, and management.
- Module 5: Shoulder: Functional anatomy, injuries, and management.
- Module 6: Knee: Functional anatomy, injuries, and management. Concussion evaluation and management.
In-person skill sessions (to be held in March, dates TBA):
- Skill session 1: Taping and support for ankle, achilles, shin splints and arches.
- Skill session 2: Taping and support for knee, hip, and thigh.
- Skill session 3: Taping and support for shoulder, wrist, and elbow.
Learning Outcomes:
- Recognize and perform physical assessments of common sports injuries.
- Select and perform correct taping techniques for rehabilitation of these injuries.
- Identify stretches for rehabilitation and prevention from sports injuries.
- Employ safe concussion management strategies.
Practicum Placement
Upon final evaluations, students will be selected for field placement with various sports teams within Mount Allison University and the Tantramar community. Depending on the placement, there will be a required number of hours to attend practices and games for their assigned team. The student will be expected to implement all care and prevention strategies acquired during their successful completion of this Care and Prevention of Sports Injuries course. All questions and concerns that arise during their practicum are to be brought to the attention of the Head Athletic Therapist and course instructor, Jocelyn Dowling.

Note: this course is designed for MtA students who are interested in participating in the practicum. The practicum is only available for MtA students at this time.
