Certified skills, confident support

Mental Health First Aid (MHFA) Certification training provides the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to support a person who may be experiencing a mental health decline or substance use crisis until professional help is available.

Instructor: Darcy Cormier, RSW and Student Wellness Social Worker at MtA

Training & Certification

The practical skills of MHFA help you build the confidence to support those around you while also being mindful of your own well-being. Through the course, participants learn how to identify and support declining mental health and crises while reducing stigma, gain a deeper understanding of mental health disorders and influences, and enhance their own mental well-being.

Participants who complete the two-day, scenario-based, in-person training earn Opening Minds' nationally recognized Mental Health First Aid certification valid for three years.

Learning Outcomes

Participants will gain:

  • A clear understanding of the role and responsibilities of a Mental Health First Aider.
  • Knowledge of mental health and illness, including the impact of stigma and how to recognize mental health on a continuum.
  • A custom list of local community mental health resources.
  • Hands-on experience applying ALGES techniques to support people showing early signs of mental health decline.
  • Strategies to maintain your own mental health and commit to sustainable self-care routine.
